Mary Ann Kvenvolden and Pat Hartinger will be hosting another book discussion group meeting at the Kvenvolden’s home in Palo Alto.  The discussion this time will be a follow up to their last meeting in September by reporting on CALCTHF member participation in the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation’s Annual Meeting held 3-7 October 2009 in Olive Branch, Mississippi, and Hohenwald, Tennessee.  The lectures, discussions and events focused around the life and final days of Meriwether Lewis. There were many special and memorable moments that occurred during the five days of the meeting.   Attendees will also view excerpts from a DVD film of the National Lewis Commemoration Ceremony held at Grinder’s Stand on October 7, 2009.

As space is limited, please RSVP by January 6, 2010 to Mary Ann Kvenvolden (650) 328-0414 or Pat Hartinger (408) 356-5363.

LEWIS TO LINNARD LETTER

A Valuable and Neglected Original Document

After more than 200 years, previously unknown information about Lewis and Clark is still being discovered.  Just such a discovery involves a letter written by Meriwether Lewis to William Linnard in Philadelphia on June 6, 1803.  By all indications, this letter was heretofore unknown to most Lewis and Clark authors, scholars, aficionados, students and fans.  The contents of this letter serves to fill in several critical gaps and correct a few misconceptions regarding the preparation phase of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition.  Through the letter we meet some interesting historical figures as well as gaining an understanding of where and when Lewis traveled by land and how he acquired, packed and shipped his supplies from Philadelphia and Harpers Ferry to Pittsburgh.

On March 20, 2010, CALCTHF Chapter member and Foundation Board member, Lorna Hainesworth will speak on the “Lewis to Linnard Letter” along with related documents using a PowerPoint presentation and live narrative.  Images of original documents are included in the presentation and attendees will receive a transcript of each letter included in Lorna's talk.
